The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Pitarch
When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
