Citizens have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict management of the region

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive return none of us will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she added.

Near the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.

Protester one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"As the night falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported another two dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medical staff stated.
