The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
