The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
