The Latest Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Regarding Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but features several notable adjustments:
- Every squad has only 8 human participants, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities performed by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities offer reduced XP.
- Only two maps are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
- Elements like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it gives additional choices for players seeking alternative ways to enjoy the title. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that not everyone will be happy. In other words, many Battlefield 6 players are upset.
Community Responses: From Fury to Support
"People want real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads a response to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," says another. At the same time, in community forums, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," and another lists everything they believe to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," while another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Criticisms and Community Input
All that said, there are valid points to complain about the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for other modes due to the large amount of options currently available. Similarly, certain regions often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that a previous feature was meant to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate bot farms from the system. So this new playlist seems like the community meeting them in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user labels this addition as the developers "making a mistake so hard, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and acting on feedback. Tasks that were overly hard were adjusted rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, should analytics indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they will not hesitate to change it again.
