The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
