Slot Maintains He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it's natural for doubts to be raised about his position after a further convincing loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their 9th loss in twelve matches, representing the club's poorest streak after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I have got significant support from the top,” Slot commented.
“It's important to reverse this trend and earn three points of course but when you're working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I accept my position. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Discussions with Club Management
Upon being questioned to provide details on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular conversations we have I perceive the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so we'll see.”
Recurring Problems and Player Response
The manager expressed regret over recurring shortcomings from his squad in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was blunter in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everyone,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I’m past being angry inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He continued, “It's tough because I’m playing for the team I support. I support them, and I’ve seen Liverpool since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a phase such as this with performances like these.”
He stated, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to get this team return to where it needs to be, prove again what this club is about and the reason it's called the greatest side in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
