Weather experts are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, meaning additional clothing vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this signified the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely key.
