Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
