Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor commented when questioned about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any decision is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would increase the party's congressional seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a weekend interview on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to cut taxpayer dollars from California and threatened revoking the authority to grant CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160 million from California," he said, after a recent tragic collision in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and injured individuals.

His administration pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had previously indicated he was holding back additional funds from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team responded in a recent release countering the funding warnings. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of a third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, extraordinary," he stated. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
